Orange County Personal Training: Too much sodium and salt?

(Shape.com)— Packed with soy sauce and too much sodium! Healthy eating (reduce amount of sodium) can help you stay on track and achieve your goals

1. Cottage Cheese

OC Fitness Training: Irvine
Cottage cheese is a dieters’ mainstay, and while it’s a good source of calcium and protein, it can be loaded with sodium, often containing 900mg per cup. If you love cottage cheese, look for low-sodium versions whenever possible, but a better choice is plain yogurt, which has about a 150mg, or an ounce of Swiss cheese, which has just has 54mg.
Tammy Lakatos Shames, RD, certified personal trainer and co-author of The Secret To Skinny: How Salt Makes You Fat and the 4-Week Plan to Drop a Size and Get Healthier also suggests mild, spreadable farmer’s cheese, which contains only 120mg sodium per ounce.
2. Bread and Croissants

OC Fitness Training: Newport Beach
Flaky pastries like croissants are a well-known diet don’t, but aside from the saturated fat (from all that butter) and calories, they also have a lot of sodium—about 400mg for just one. Bread, even whole wheat, can also contain a fair amount of sodium at about 150mg per slice.
“This is always a shocker for our clients because they think bread doesn’t contain much salt at all,” Lakatos Shames says. “It actually has nearly the same amount of sodium as a serving of potato chips, but because the salt is on the surface of the chip it’s easier to taste, but with bread it’s baked in,” she says. Bagels are extremely high in sodium as well—some larger ones can contain nearly 700mg.
3. Bottled Salad Dressing

OC Fitness Training: Long Beach
Yes, it may seem easier to buy it than make it, but most commercial brands of salad dressing can have up to 300mg sodium per 2 tbsp, and sugar-free and fat-free varieties—which seem like the healthier option—are often loaded with sodium to boost flavor to compensate for the missing fat.
You can choose low-sodium or no-salt-added varieties, but the salt is there for a reason as well—it adds flavor. A better idea, says Lakatos Shames, is to use lemon juice and olive oil or a good balsamic vinegar on your salad.
4. Fast Food Salads

OC Fitness Training: Huntington Beach
If you’re choosing chicken Caesar over a Quarter Pounder, good for you, but, like bottled salad dressing, the sodium count of fast food salads is amped up by the packaged dressing. Still, that packet of ranch isn’t the only culprit: High-sodium meats, croutons and other additions can send the salt count sky high. For example, the Premium Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken at McDonalds has 1070mg sodium with dressing. If this is your only lunch option, skip the dressing and toss a few of the croutons.

Orange County Personal Training: Melt your belly fat with 4 ingredients

(Fitbie.com–) Try melting your belly fat by consuming these four foods!

Fish

OC Fitness Training: Irvine
Another day, another study about the benefits of eating fish—and for good reason. We know from animal studies that when your diet is deficient in omega-3s, the natural rhythms of your pineal gland—the pea-size gland in the center of your brain—are thrown off, leading to alterations in the production of melatonin, your sleep hormone. Animals with an omega-3 deficit don’t sleep during their usual rest periods—they’re up and spinning in their wheels the same way that humans with insomnia do. A diet rich in omega-3s, on the other hand, can boost heart health, lower your risk of dementia, and improve your moods. As for weight loss, many omega-3 carriers are rich in protein. (Video: Surprising Belly Flattener) And study after study confirms: Protein makes you feel full. You even burn more calories digesting protein than you do when you eat fats or carbs.

Nuts

OC Fitness Training: Newport Beach
As if you needed another excuse to eat nuts, these fatty legumes are a great source of mood-boosting magnesium. Without enough magnesium in your body, the part of the brain that regulates melatonin is thrown off, disrupting your sleep. An uptick in magnesium is what tells animals it’s time to hibernate—for us, not having enough of it may play a role in seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the depression—and carb-craving—condition brought on by the low light of winter.

Milk

OC Fitness Training: Laguna Hills
While the link between calcium and weight loss is still feeble (in some studies it promotes greater weight loss, in others it’s a wash), it turns out that milk may really do a body good when it comes to belly fat.

A 2010 study by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that, among a group of more than 100 premenopausal women, fat was significantly reduced in those who consumed the most calcium-rich foods. In fact, for every 100 milligrams of calcium they consumed per day (that’s 1/2 cup of soft-serve frozen yogurt), they lost an inch of intra-abdominal fat—that’s the really bad stuff tucked in and around your internal organs that has been linked to higher rates of heart disease and cancer.

Tart Cherries

OC Fitness Training: South Coast Metro
Around bedtime, munch on a few tart Montmorency cherries. These cherries are one of a number of plant-based sources of melatonin, the sleep hormone. (Bananas and corn have it, too.) While there’s no evidence that they’ll help you nod off, studies have found that foods like these can raise melatonin levels in the body. (Search: Foods containing melatonin) Not only does melatonin help you sleep, but it’s a powerful antioxidant that can protect your cells from free radical damage, the kind that leads to cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other diseases. That should help you sleep easy.

Orange County Personal Training: Using Greek Yogurt in your meals

(Shape.com–) There are many ways to enjoy the low-calorie, low fat,  Greek Yogurt. Try using Greek yogurt in these easy simple ways:

Salad Dressing

OC Personal Training: Irvine
What’s not to love in a creamy and tangy dressing that doesn’t load up on fat? Try this healthier version of a green goddess dressing that uses Greek yogurt and avocado instead of sour cream or mayo.
Chocolate Frosting

OC Personal Training: Newport Beach
Never reach for that store-bought tub again. This easy Chobani recipe uses just two ingredients — Greek yogurt and semisweet chocolate chips — to make a healthy topping for cupcakes and cakes. Try it on top of these healthy chocolate cupcakes.
Mashed Cauliflower

OC Personal Training: Long Beach
Switch it up and cut calories with this mashed potato substitute. This recipe uses cauliflower mashed in a Greek yogurt, garlic, and shallot mixture (with a dab of butter) for an inventive take on the dinner side.
Potato Salad

OC Personal Training: Costa Mesa
A Greek yogurt-blended potato salad hits all the right notes: make one with traditional potato salad favorites like mustard, cayenne pepper or paprika, and red onion (try this recipe), but cut out much of the fat by ditching the mayo.

Orange County Personal Training: Healthy easy, grab and go breakfast and snacks!

(Fitbie.com–) Start your day with a healthy easy, grab and go breakfast and snacks!

Banana Dog
362 calories, 17.5 g fat, 6.9 g fiber, 13 g protein

OC Fitness Training: Irvine

Spread two tablespoons of natural peanut butter on a piece of whole wheat bread and wrap around a banana, and you’ve got a tidy roll that’ll delight your inner child. (Check out these other healthy childhood favorites.) The peanut butter delivers a dose of healthy monounsaturated fats and hunger-quelling protein that’ll keep you satisfied.
Starbucks Spinach and Feta Breakfast Wrap
290 calories, 10 g fat, 6 g fiber, 19 g protein

OC Fitness Training: Long Beach

Sorry, coffee doesn’t count as your morning meal. If you usually swing by the ‘Bucks to caffeinate on the way to work, add one of their spinach and feta breakfast wraps to your tab. Although the sodium count is a little high (830 mg or 36% of your daily recommended limit), it’s made with protein-packed egg whites so you’ll stay fuller, longer, and on fewer calories than one of their muffins.
Cranberry Almond + Antioxidants Kind Bar
190 calories, 13 g fat, 3 g fiber, 3 g protein

OC Fitness Training: Tustin

“Most breakfast bars are more like candy bars—high in fat, sugar and hydrogenated oils,” say the Nutrition Twins. “But we like the Kind bars because they’re a great combination of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats.” It helps that you can pronounce all of their ingredients, too. Just toss it in your bag and pair with a piece of your favorite fruit.
Greek Yogurt and Cereal
220 calories, 1 g fat, 5 g fiber, 22 g protein

OC Fitness Training: Costa Mesa

Grab a single-serving cup of plain, nonfat Greek yogurt (the Nutrition Twins like Chobani), which is super-creamy and packs twice as much protein as normal yogurts. Top it with a fiber-rich cereal like Nature’s Path Organic Heritage Flakes and dress it up with a few berries for a DIY yogurt parfait.
